MAFIA TOO MUCH FOR DEPLETED VENOM
HILLSBORO – The Vancouver Venom entered their Sunday matchup with the Rip City Mafia hoping to prove to the rest of the league that they’re better than their result showed in week one against the Washington Sentinels. Unfortunately for the Venom, they faced two big roadblocks in their path to success – low roster numbers, and the Rip City Mafia.
The Mafia, coming off of a close victory over the Portland Nightmare the previous week, hoped to continue their streak of success and send a reminder to the rest of their league that they still belong in the championship conversation. They did just that. The Mafia jumped out to an early lead, and late in the second quarter saw their lead balloon all the way up to 28 points. However, the Mafia’s solid play was cut short after just one half after the Venom opted to call the game.
The Vancouver Venom, already plagued with low numbers to start the season, entered their game against the Mafia with only 13 available bodies. Even worse, many of those available players were playing through injuries; injuries that only got worse throughout the game. With five minutes left in the first half, the Venom saw yet another one of their players go down with an injury, leaving them with few options. Ultimately, the Venom decided it was best to live to see another day, and preserve their remaining players and prevent their few remaining available players from further injuries. The Venom elected to forfeit the game.
It was an unfortunate ending for both teams, but likely the best decision to make with sights set on the long haul. Unfortunately for the Venom, their schedule doesn’t get any easier. They face off next week with the Benton Bulldawgs (1-0) at King’s Way in Vancouver.
The Rip City Mafia travel to Vancouver next week to take on the Washington Sentinels (1-0). Not only will this be a battle of unbeatens, but it will also be a rematch of the PNFL’s inaugural championship game last season, which the Sentinels won in dominating fashion. This is a game both teams had circled on their calendars as soon as the schedule was released, and fans can expect to be treated to a hard hitting, and highly entertaining game.
